My 1.9 diesel had a crack in the exhaust just after the catalytic converter. It was a clean break rather than rusted through. My "local" garage repaired it by inserting a piece of exhaust tubing (about 1/2 an inch long ) into the cracked area then welded it all the way round so it is welded back together and it is also welded to the piece inside so strengthening it,saving me quite a bit of money. How many other garages would do that rather than charge you for a new one? Anyway what if a cat was removed on a diesel ? How much effect do they have and what effect would it have on performance? Has anyone tried it ?

The vehicle would most likely be illegal to use without a cat and it would certainly fail an MOT. I doubt there would be mcuh difference in performance as most modern cats are fairly unrestrictive.

Depends on whether the tester spots it. It won't fail the emission test without the cat.

depends on when it was first registered? after 01/08/92 all vehicles must have a cat fitted to pass an MOT

I think you may be wrong here and if it were a petrol car you are definately wrong. The MOT test does NOT require a CAT to be fitted, it DOES require that certain emission levels are reached and thus the only practical way is with a CAT. I was in this situation with a Range Rover, new CAT's were over

johnb80 is correct - go to the top of the class!

Cats are not compulsory - just emissions

Thanks and I hope I didn`t cause too much of an argument here. I spoke to my local garage man and he says also, that it wouldn`t fail an MOT but he`s not too sure what the effect would be on performance.
